Thoughts on Movement

Thoughts on Movement

Motion and movement, these constants in our physical realm, shift and change everything around us and within us.

I’ve been feeling stuck lately. Paralyzed by anxiety, even. This year has brought forth much loss, grief, and massive change. And it all sort of culminated over the last few weeks, holding me still.

So I finally began painting. Working on things in progress, just adding layers, adding motion. And this little painting emerged. This is one of my palettes, sort of. I’ve started using small canvases as palettes to just see what happens, and save more material. And this tiny little experimental painting shook me free.

When I paint without a subject in mind, without a goal, there’s a sort of magic that comes out of it. I saw within the dark area of this an evolution of creatures—a jaguar, a lizard, a lion, and finally a face, with a tiny guardian creature on his right shoulder. And that’s when the image clicked for me.

I’m not yet capable of describing this process, but I can tell you that it makes all the difference in my life. No matter your skill set, no matter your lifestyle, there is magic in working with color. Get a few brushes of different sizes, get a few colors in a paint you’re drawn to, and every once in a while just see what happens. If you let go of what it should be, you might be surprised by what you hear from the movement of the colors. And isn’t that the perfect metaphor for life. Just see what happens dancing through the movement of it all.

So much love to all of you!
